This doctrine of Śiva’s 36 tattvas is from ancient Kashmiri Shaivism texts by Abhinavagupta’s Tantrāloka (9-11th century), as well as grounded in the Śiva Sūtras by Vasugupta (9th Century) and interpreted through the Īśvara Pratyabhijñā Kārikā by Utpaladeva (c. 900–950 CE) as part of the Pratyabhijna philosophy, with experiential methods given in the Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra.
