Nāgas: The serpent guardians of consciousness
For thousands of years, the Nāgas have slithered through the hidden corridors of human memory — worshipped as gods, feared as shapeshifters, and revered as guardians of sacred wisdom. From the serpent of Eden to the coiled cobra around Shiva’s neck, from the cosmic serpent Ananta upon whom Vishnu dreams creation into existence, their presence echoes across civilizations, scriptures, and forgotten mysteries.
An exploration of the ancient shape-shifter serpent beings revered across cultures as guardians of wisdom, consciousness, and transformation. Drawing from Hindu cosmology, esoteric traditions, and sacred symbolism, this book uncovers the enduring mysteries of the Nāgas and their role in humanity’s spiritual journey.
The Vertical descent of Shiva through the 36 tattvas
The thirty-six tattvas are among the most profound and sophisticated metaphysical frameworks in the spiritual traditions of India. In the Shaiva understanding, the universe is understood not as something created outside of God, but as Śiva’s own ecstatic unfolding through Śakti into every dimension of existence.
They describe the complete spectrum of existence — from the infinite, unbounded consciousness of Paramaśiva to the densest layers of physical reality. This book draws upon the revelatory scriptures and philosophical masterworks of Trika Kashmir Shaivism, including the Tantrāloka, Tantrasāra, Mālinīvijayottara Tantra, Śiva Sūtras, Spanda Kārikā, and Pratyabhijñāhṛdayam, along with the teachings of the great masters Abhinavagupta, Utpaladeva, Kṣemarāja, and Swami Lakshmanjoo.
In the Shaiva understanding, these tattvas are living stages in the descent of consciousness itself. They map the gradual self-concealment of Śiva through vibration, limitation, mind, body, matter, space, and time, revealing how the One becomes the many without ever ceasing to remain One. Hidden within this descent is also the path of return — the recognition that every layer of existence is permeated by the same divine consciousness from which it emerged.
Every layer of existence is therefore sacred, alive, and permeated with divine intelligence. Yet the descent is only half the journey. Hidden within every tattva is the possibility of recognition — the awakening through which the individual remembers its essential nature as the very Consciousness from which the cosmos arose. This book is both a philosophical study and a contemplative pilgrimage through these levels of manifestation, inviting the reader to experience the universe not as fragmented matter, but as the living body of Śiva Himself.
