Sacred Oils – Death & Dying

Sacred Oils – Death & Dying

A psychopomp is a guide or entity in many religions, mythologies, and cultures who leads or escorts newly deceased souls to the afterlife. The term comes from the Greek words for “soul” and “guide.” Psychopomps can take many forms, including angels, deities, spirits, or even animals. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply provide safe passage for the Soul, enabling it to transition. Frequently depicted on funerary art, psychopomps have been associated at different times and in different cultures with horses, ravens, dogs, crows, owls, sparrows, cuckoos, etc. In Jungian psychology, the psychopomp is a mediator between the unconscious and conscious realms. It is symbolically personified in dreams as a wise man or woman, or sometimes as a helpful animal. In many cultures, the shaman also fulfils the role of the psychopomp.
